Geographic Location

The Municipality of Mataasnakahoy lies in the northeastern portion of Batangas Province. It is approximately 86 kilometers (km) from Manila, about 1 hour and a 45-minute drive south via Southern Tagalog Arterial Road (STAR) and South Luzon Expressway (SLEX). The Municipality is seven (7) kilometers from Lipa City and 23.5 km from Batangas City. It is two (2) km from the National Highway, which connects the two cities. It is bounded on the southeast by the 100th Training Wing of Fernando Air Base, Lipa City; on the southwest by Barangay Banay-banay and Bagong Pook of Lipa City; on the northwest by Taal Lake; and on the northeast by the Municipality of Balete, Batangas. 121˚ 08’ 24” east longitude and 14˚ 01’ 12” north latitude.

Land Area

Mataasnakahoy has a total land area of 2,409.59 hectares and is comprised of eleven (11) rural and five (5) urban barangays. Barangays Nangkaan, Kinalaglagan, and Lumanglipa, all located near Taal Lake, has the lowest elevation. Meanwhile, Barangays I, II, II-A, III, and IV have the highest elevation. The adjacent barangays of Bayorbor, Bubuyan, Calingatan, Loob, Manggahan, San Sebastian, Santol, and Upa are situated in between.

Population Distribution

The Municipality has a total population of 30,621. There are five barangays classified as urban (Barangays I, II, II-A, III, and IV) with a total population of 10, 738 or 35% of the total population. On the one hand, the nine rural barangays have a total population of 19,883, or 65%.

Barangay III has the highest population in the Municipality. It is also the most populous among the urban barangays with a population of 3,385 or 11% participation rate. The least populous urban barangay is Barangay II-A, with only 986 residents or 4% participation rate.

In rural barangays, Calingatan has the highest population with 3,127 (10%). Barangay Manggahan has the lowest population with only 782 individuals (3%). Likewise, it is the least populous barangay in the entire Municipality (Table 1).

The hierarchy of settlements in Mataasnakahoy shows the order of barangays by the population. It can be observed that only Barangays III (with a population of 3,385) and Calingatan (with a population of 3,127) have a population of more than 3,000. Mostly, the populated barangays are in the urban areas and may result in congestion if the growth process will not be managed. With this, the Municipal Government should identify other growth nodes that also have a relatively high population size, such as Barangays Calingatan, Kinalaglagan, and Nangkaan. Meanwhile, Barangays Manggahan and San Sebastian have populations of less than 1,000 or 782 and 928, respectively.
